Art critic Donald Goddard has written, "in Dobb's paintings the human being becomes its own architecture. Life is performed through his art, referencing the follies of Goya, and the occasional appearance of a personage from a painting of Titian, Veronese, or Gericault – just as art is performed through his life." Life's trials are portrayed in Dobbs' paintings by figures performing balancing acts – figures walking on tightropes, stilts, and in a variety of different situations capture these climactic moments.
