The scene, reversed in the print, first appeared in the 1954 painting Election Night where the same characters are also present. At about this time someone had suggested that Levine should consider wiping his own plates, thereby reaching for a richness and variance not possible with a cleanly wiped plate. Working with Sorini, Levine experimented with wiping the plate for this edition.
