CURTIS WRIGHT
Statement on Baseball Work

I’ve always thought of an early to mid-twentieth century baseball player to be the ideal, classical form: an athletic body beneath flowing, baggy flannel. No matter how many times I walk into a stadium, I immediately go into a state of sensory overload. The verdant expanse of grass, the russet clay of the infield, the ivory chalk lines along with the clean, colorful graphics on the outfield walls nearly renders the score of an individual game irrelevant. These paintings are my versions of icons—sort of channeling Fra Angelico through Casey Stengel.
